Larry was part of the first wave of western practitioners from around the world who would travel to India to learn the Ashtanga Yoga Methods. For many years Larry trained under the guidance of PJ, but eventually found his desired approach had distinct differences. Particularly to the hierarchy of postures and the inaccessible more advance postures of the Ashtanga Vinyasa Sequences. Larry always held respect, but choose to "break the rules" and modify the postures and allowing more accessibility to the postures and thus more progression in the series. Larry was also against the method of adjustment that was presented in the traditional method and choose to focus on intention, verbal cues and light "2 finger adjustments"
This iconic picture of Larry was taken in 848 Folsom which is where so many of us were first introduced to the magic of Ashtanga Yoga and The Rocket! Larry encouraged people to spread their fingers and make space for the energy to flow. His expression here was captured and, for me, shows his balance of authority and friendship.
There are only a few high quality photos that Larry had produced for promotions and such. This along with a few others shows Larrys ease in practicing the more advanced asana of Ashtanga. This choice to play with postures from the advanced series of Ashtanga and offer them to newer students was a key decision in what made Rocket so popular.
